Presentation Title: A Perspective on Practical Intersections of Cyber Security and Business Continuity
About the Presentation:
At its core, IT security is really a business problem. However, many enterprises traditionally (and sometimes unintentionally)
segregate responsibilities for data security and business continuity. The former is often seen as a "technical problem" - and the latter
has emerged as a multi-billion dollar professional industry that is focused generally on risk management, to include work center
health and safety issues, and disaster planning. This presentation introduces business continuity concepts and activities, as well as
perspective on how they overlap and integrate with cyber security efforts across an enterprise. Using a risk-based approach to
assessing risks and developing mitigation strategies, enterprises are able to handle cyber incidents and attacks as robustly as other
natural and man-made disasters. The perspectives presented are drawn from lessons learned from applying risk assessment and
contingency planning methods as part of a three-year international training program for information-based industries, academia, and
government agencies from over 180 countries.
